vocal Music

Highland Community College offers courses in vocal music with an emphasis in music as a transfer program for students who plan to complete an associate in arts at HCC and then transfer to another institution to pursue a bachelor's degree. The courses includes coursework, performance, and private instruction applied lessons. Employment opportunities exist in teaching, professional performance, audio production, arts administration, and music business. 

Performance Ensembles

  • Lads and Lassies – Enroll in M 113/114 - This course is designed for both music majors and other students interested in performing with a show choir ensemble that features various styles of contemporary music along with choreography. The ensemble also travels within the college service area to perform. An audition is required to join this group. Please contact the HCC Music Faculty for more information on enrollment.  

  • HCC Chorus – Enroll in M 115/116 - This course is designed for both music majors and other students interested in performing with a stage chorus that features various styles of music in three mainstage concerts throughout the year.

This course covers the basics of music, including symbols, rhythm, and scale construction. The course also introduces reading and dictation in two or three parts, the minor modes and chromatics, eye and ear study through the simple modulations, and transpositions.

This course provides a survey of American musical theatre. The course will cover the historical development of musical theatre, significant style periods, and significant composers. The course will emphasize music theatre as social, political, and cultural expression. NOTE: This course is the same as TH 146. Students may enroll in and receive credit for either M 146 or TH 146 but cannot enroll in or receive credit for both courses.

This course will provide an introduction to music across the world. The basic elements of music and musical style from specific regions will be studied. The course will also emphasize music as self-expression.

This course will provide a study of the harmonic systems used in musical composition from approximately 1650 to 1900, including mastery of scales, keys, intervals, rhythms, and basic triads. The course will cover simple four-part writing, triad inversions, non-chord tones, secondary chords, and dominant seventh chords. Students will also analyze chorales, hymns, and representative literature from recognized style periods.

This course will provide more advanced study of the harmonic systems used in musical composition from approximately 1650 to 1900, including mastery of scales, keys, intervals, rhythms, and basic triads. The course will cover simple four-part writing, triad inversions, non-chord tones, secondary chords, and dominant seventh chords. Students will also analyze chorales, hymns, and representative literature from recognized style periods.


M 233 Music Theory III

3 Credit Hours

Prerequisite: M 201 

This course will provide further study of harmony and composition. The course will examine dominant and secondary dominant harmonies, modulation, and chromatic harmony.  Formal analysis and 20th century techniques will also be introduced.


M 234 Music Theory IV

3 Credit Hours

Prerequisite: M 233 

This course will provide more advanced study of the harmonic systems used in musical composition from approximately 1650 to 1900, including mastery of scales, keys, intervals, rhythms, and basic triads. The course will cover simple four-part writing, triad inversions, non-chord tones, secondary chords, and dominant seventh chords. Students will also analyze chorales, hymns, and representative literature from recognized style periods.

This course provides a listening-based approach to the evolutionary development of America’s unique jazz art form. The course will cover the American roots of jazz and its early figures, the development of various jazz styles, significant jazz musicians, and the place of jazz in modern music.
