HIGHLAND, Kan. – Highland Community College proudly awarded its inaugural Drum Major for Justice Award Friday, Jan. 17, to three outstanding individuals who were nominated by their peers and selected by a committee: HCC student Andrew Dalconzo, HCC employee Shannon Wiedmer and community member Mark Rounds.
Inspired by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s legacy, the Drum Major for Justice Award recognizes individuals whose lives exemplify service, compassion and the pursuit of justice. This honor celebrates the profound impact of everyday acts of kindness and leadership that lift others and build a more just and compassionate world.
The recipients of this award were chosen not for seeking recognition, but because they embody grace, humility and an unwavering commitment to serving others. Their actions inspire us all to embrace our shared responsibility to make a difference.
Student Recipient: Andrew Dalconzo
Hailing from Broomfield, Colorado, Andrew Dalconzo is a shining example of selfless leadership and community engagement. A dedicated member of the HCC baseball team and TriO Student Support Services program, Andrew consistently goes above and beyond to support those around him.
Whether mentoring freshmen teammates, volunteering with his local church in Hiawatha or engaging with young community members, Andrew’s actions reflect his deep compassion and integrity. He has a gift for recognizing unseen needs and making a lasting impact. This fall, Andrew will continue his academic and athletic journey at Lubbock Christian University, where he is sure to inspire those around him with his commitment to service.
Employee Recipient: Shannon Wiedmer
Shannon Wiedmer, HCC Bookstore Manager and resident of Troy, Kansas, is the heart of the Highland campus community. Known affectionately as the “Bookstore Mom,” Shannon is a constant source of warmth, support and kindness.
Her dedication goes far beyond her role, welcoming students with open arms and creating a safe space where they feel seen and valued. From offering a listening ear to hosting students in her home during the holidays, Shannon’s selflessness knows no bounds. She ensures that every student—whether facing personal challenges or adjusting to life far from home—feels cared for and supported. Her tireless efforts have made the bookstore and the campus a sanctuary for all.
Community Member Recipient: Mark Rounds
Mark Rounds, a Highland, Kansas resident and former city manager, has devoted his life to service and advocacy. A member of the HCC board of trustees, Mark is a passionate leader and mentor who champions fairness, equity and student success.
Throughout his career, Mark has worked tirelessly to uplift others, from advocating for social justice as a city manager in Tulsa, Oklahoma, to mentoring future leaders in his local community. His commitment to fairness and dignity continues to influence his work at Highland, where his leadership has helped shape policies that benefit students, staff and the broader community. Mark’s dedication to service extends far beyond the boardroom—his presence at college events and in everyday interactions inspires everyone he meets.
