Highland Community College celebrated its 168th Commencement Ceremony on Friday, May 8, at Porter Family Stadium in Highland, honoring the achievements of graduates from across the college’s academic and technical programs.
The ceremony began with a tradition unique to Highland Community College as the Kansas City Celtic Pipes and Drums led the processional from the Jack D. Nutt Math Science Building down North Elmira Street to Kessinger Field. Faculty members and graduates were seated on the field. The HCC Lads & Lassies, directed by Shayna Leahy, performed the college Alma Mater, written by 1900 graduate Georgia Baird Hayes.
The commencement address was delivered by Shayne Wahlmeier, a 2005 HCC graduate. Wahlmeier reflected on his experiences as a student at Highland and the lasting impact the college had on his personal and professional development. He spoke about the support, opportunities and relationships that helped shape his future. He encouraged graduates to embrace the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead.
The ceremony also recognized outstanding faculty members for their dedication to teaching and professional growth.
Established in 1990, the Bruning Award honors the legacy of Dr. Herbert and Emily Lucas Bruning, longtime advocates for education and charter members of the HCC Foundation Board. The award supports professional development opportunities for faculty and reflects the Brunings’ lifelong commitment to education. This year’s Bruning Award was presented to Dr. Amy C. Foley, Health Science Instructor.
The Bauer Memorial Award, established in memory of 1941 HCC graduates Virgil and Lou Bauer, recognizes faculty members and supports their professional development. The Bauers were lifelong supporters of Highland Community College and its mission. This year’s recipients were Shane Clapper, History Instructor, and Carol White, Mathematics Instructor.
The college conferred an honorary degree upon Tyler Miller of Wathena. As owner of M CON, LLC, Miller has demonstrated leadership and a commitment to community growth through investments that have created jobs and contributed to economic development throughout Doniphan County. The honorary degree recognizes his service, leadership and positive impact on the region.
A total of 152 students were candidates for associate degrees from Highland Community College this spring. Additionally, 155 students were candidates for certificates through the Technical Center in Atchison and the Western Center in Baileyville.
As graduates crossed the stage and celebrated with family and friends, the ceremony marked not only the completion of their studies at Highland, but also the beginning of new opportunities and future successes. Congratulations to the HCC class of 2026.
